LEVEL 4

WHAT IS LEVEL 4 ENDORSEMENT IN PAUL ROLLAND STRING PEDAGOGY? 

Level 4 Endorsement in Paul Rolland String Pedagogy is approximately 13-15 hours and is the final portion of a four-part process in Paul Rolland String Pedagogy Certification.  Level 4 is preceded by Level 1 (a full Paul Rolland String Pedagogy Workshop approved by the Paul Rolland String Pedagogy Society of at least 17-20 hours), Level 2, and Level 3.  See FAQ #12 for post-certification training options.

WHERE CAN I FIND MORE INFORMATION ON THE TEACHERS OF LEVEL 4 ENDORSEMENT?

The teachers, called “mentors,” are students of Paul Rolland and those who have been trained by them.  For a list of PRSPS mentors, visit the Faculty page.

WHO WILL MY TEACHER ("MENTOR") BE?

Your mentor will be assigned from a list of experienced mentors.  The candidate’s background and Rolland pedagogy experiences will be considered in assigning the mentor. 

DO I NEED TO HAVE THE LEVEL 3 ENDORSEMENT BEFORE TAKING LEVEL 4?

Yes.  The Levels must be taken sequentially; Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, and Level 4, and it is recommended to have six months in between each Level for the application of Paul Rolland String Pedagogy. 

HOW OFTEN IS LEVEL 4 ENDORSEMENT OFFERED?

Level 4 Endorsement is offered periodically by the Paul Rolland String Pedagogy Society.  Contact PRSPS for details.

HOW DO I REGISTER?

The Level 4 Endorsement application is available here.  Space will be limited. The deadline to register is three weeks before the beginning of the training.  For a timeline of Level 4 click here.

WHAT ARE THE EXPECTATIONS FOR LEVEL 4?

  • Submission of your pre- and post-instruction playing videos, journal notes on the instruction sessions and on private lessons with your mentor, and notes on The Teaching of Action in String Playing chapters and on the films referenced in the curriculum  

  • Teaching evaluation

  • Using your primary instrument during instruction and for the evaluations

  • If not seen previously, take notes on the following videos and include them in your journal:

    • Level 2 Rolland Actions, cello

    • Level 2 Rolland Actions, bass

    • Level 3 Rolland Actions, cello

    • Level 3 Rolland Actions, bass 

WHAT MATERIALS ARE REQUIRED FOR THE LEVEL 4 SESSIONS?

IS THERE PREPARATION EXPECTED AHEAD OF THE START OF SESSIONS?

Reading and taking notes on specific chapters and films in The Teaching of Action in String Playing and making your pre-instruction video are required.  The detailed curriculum is available after the registration process is completed.  

WHERE CAN I FIND OUT MORE INFORMATION ON LEVELS 1, 2 AND 3?

MUST I PASS A TEST TO BE GRANTED A LEVEL 4 ENDORSEMENT/CERTIFICATION?

Yes, there are three parts to the Final Evaluation for Level 4:

  • A Teaching Final Evaluation that includes teaching two advanced Rolland Actions and their preliminary steps to a pupil of your choice. 

  • A Playing Final Evaluation (post-instruction video) of you playing two 16-measure passages of your most advanced piece demonstrating your ability to successfully perform Rolland actions. 

  • Submission of a journal of notes from the text, films, and sessions.

IS THERE ANY OTHER TRAINING IN PAUL ROLLAND STRING PEDAGOGY BESIDES LEVEL 1 ENDORSEMENT, LEVEL 2 ENDORSEMENT, LEVEL 3 ENDORSEMENT, AND LEVEL 4 ENDORSEMENT?

Yes.  There is Presenter Training and Mentor Training that can be taken after Certification in Paul Rolland String Pedagogy or with special permission from the Paul Rolland String Pedagogy Society. 

WILL I RECEIVE CERTIFICATION UPON SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF LEVEL 4?

Yes.  After successful completion of Level 4 requirements, you will be awarded Certification in Paul Rolland String Pedagogy.  Upon payment of Paul Rolland String Pedagogy Society annual dues, you will maintain your membership and be listed on the Society’s website as “Certified in Paul Rolland String Pedagogy.”
